Ugly Sweaters and Gingerbread Houses!

By Thomas Boyle

Happy Hanukah, Merry Christmas, Season’s Greetings!  Whatever you celebrate this is a great time of year to bring teams together. Working at one of the 20 locations here at SilkRoad we take working happy seriously. This year we decided to put on our ugliest sweaters, sharpen our gingerbread skills and get together for some holiday fun. Of course, in years past we’ve done our share of parties, but up until this year they were all off-site at some swanky bowling alley or adult arcade. This year with more growth than ever, the SilkRoad J-ville crew decided to throw our own Holiday Bash right here in the office.  Oh and J-ville…that’s lingo for Jacksonville, FL. : )

This simple move of changing the venue and planning some fun activities created a team environment and atmosphere that was missing from every other event.  Sure they were fun, but  rather than sitting at separate tables or bowling with your cube buddies, we ate together watching Christmas Vacation and interacting through some really fun activities

6 Gingerbread Houses entered the competition, here’s a couple of them:

Some of us took ugly sweaters to a whole new level  in the ugly sweater competition:

In the end we learned that it doesn’t take a fancy venue or massive budget to pull off a holiday party that has helped strengthen existing relationships while creating so many new ones. I can’t think of a better way to start 2013 than with a strong unified team!!

I will always cherish the set of Mustache Coasters I won (was stuck with?) in the White Elephant gift exchange. It was a great time indeed. Also notice in the first gingerbread house picture (the one with the SilkRoad smile) the snowman’s name is Flip and he is equipped with a life like pony tail made of yarn. Despite the shameless SilkRoad references we did not win (or record a single vote for that matter). Looking forward to trying to top this next year.
